Archivo 8 Bajos es una muestra de los materiales sonoros que forman parte del trabajo de campo realizado por el investigador José A. Curbelo, entre 2001 y 2016, sobre la música de acordeón y bandoneón del norte de Uruguay. Actualmente, contiene 33 músicas seleccionadas para intentar mostrar el desarrollo y diversidad de este fenómeno musical que tiene su origen en mediados del siglo XIX. Muestra sus raíces en acordeones de una hilera, demuestra la diversidad de estilos y ritmos bailables en el acordeón de dos hileras, revela su diversidad étnica y procesos de transmisión oral. También muestra la relación entre el acordeón de botón y el bandoneón y la influencia de músicas populares afroamericanas del siglo XX. Examina intersecciones entre música típica y música popular, presenta la diversidad de repertorios del acordeón a piano y, al final, destaca al uso del bandoneón en el norte uruguayo. El Archivo 8 Bajos crecerá en la diversidad y cantidad de su contenido a lo largo de los años y que busca ser una herramienta importante y duradera para la identidad cultural musical del Uruguay. Archivo 8 Bajos is a cross section of the audio materials produced through field work conducted by researcher José A. Curbelo from 2001-2016 focusing on traditional accordion and bandoneon music from northern Uruguay. Currently, the archive has 33 audio recordings curated to attempt to demonstrate the development and diversity of this musical phenomena that has its roots in the mid-19th Century. The album shows the roots of the music in one-row button accordions, explores the diversity of dance rhythms and styles of the two-row button accordion, reveals the music´s ethnic diversity and processes of oral/aural transmission. The album also shows the relation between the button accordion and the bandoneon and the influence of 20th Century Afro-American popular music. It examines the intersections between típica and popular music, presents a diversity of piano accordion repertoire, and finally, highlights the traditional usage of the bandoneon in northern Uruguay. Archivo 8 Bajos will grow in the diversity and quantity of its content throughout the years and aims to become an important, long-lasting tool for Uruguay´s musical and cultural identity.
